Types of Metal Roof Panels

When picking out metal roof panels for your building project, it’s essential to take into account the roofing profile that best suits your needs. Your two main options include exposed fastener and concealed fastener profiles, each catering to different building requirements. Learn more about each option in the sections below.

Exposed Fastener

Exposed fastener steel roof panels are an economical option for many roofing projects. This roofing style involves securing overlapping panels directly onto the roof deck, with the fastener heads remaining visible after installation. These panels are easy to install, meaning quicker installation and more efficient use of your resources. These fasteners often are painted to blend in with the roofing panels, reducing their visibility.

Standing Seam/Concealed Fastener Systems

Standing seam metal roof panels are designed to interlock at their edges, forming a vertical seam. The height of these seams can vary, usually falling between 1 to 2 1/2 inches. In residential settings, these panels typically snap together without the need for exposed fasteners. This method accommodates the natural expansion and contraction caused by temperature fluctuations, enhancing their lifespan and minimizing stress on the roof deck. For a more secure attachment, these steel roof panels can be mechanically seamed for added strength.
